Our Breeding Program
Most of my litters are the culmination of more than two to four years of planning to produce these beautiful dachshund sweeties and I have to continue to plan for the next generation. I don’t breed tons of litters…always quality over quantity, so I understand it is frustrating sometimes for families waiting for pet puppies. I can only hope that all of my hard work, hours of pedigree research, thousands of dollars spent on health testing and preventative veterinary care, years of planning and time spent raising the best dachshund puppies I can makes those puppies worth the wait. I think it does…that’s why I do what I do…for the love of dogs and this very special, talented, fun-loving, snuggling, ball-chasing, feet-warming, “tall-minded”, licks and kisses breed. Approval process
The first step is to fill out our Prospective Puppy Owner Questionnaire. We will then contact you either by phone or e-mail to visit about the puppies we have available and the type of home you can provide for a dachshund puppy. Please keep in mind that we ask a lot of questions because we care about our pups. We don’t require “perfection” in a prospective home, just an appropriate, loving environment for success in a placement. We reserve the right to cancel any puppy sale for any reason at any time.
Deposit
Deposits are not accepted prior to the birth of a litter. Puppies are listed for sale until a deposit (usually $300 but may vary by litter) is received. No puppies are held without paid deposit. Deposits are non-refundable, so please be sure you intend to complete the purchase before placing a deposit on a puppy. YOU MUST COMPLETE OUR QUESTIONNAIRE AND BE APPROVED BEFORE YOU WILL BE ALLOWED TO PLACE A DEPOSIT.
Please note that deposits placed at the time of birth of a litter assures your family a puppy from the litter, however deposits are not placed on a specific puppy. As we breed primarily to produce the next generation of show puppies for our own family, all puppies are evaluated for temperament and conformation at 7-8 weeks of age. At that time, we try to match up those puppies available to pet homes to the families best suited to their temperament and personality. Many times, all puppies are spoken for with deposits within days (or even hours) of their birth, and then matched with specific families as they grow. While we make every effort to accommodate reasonable requests on gender, coat and color, we believe the most important consideration when placing a pet puppy in a new family is temperament. This is why we make the final placement decisions for each puppy and not the other way around. The more flexible a family is in allowing us to use our years of experience and expertise to choose the right puppy for them, the more likely we will be able to place a puppy with that family.
Litters that will be evaluated at 8-12 weeks…
Some litters we will not accept deposits at the time of birth. These litters will be evaluated for possible show and performance activity puppies between 8-12 weeks of age. Once we have made our selections for which puppies will be staying with us, we will make the other puppies available to pet homes. Those announcements are made first to families who have completed the Prospective Puppy Owner’s Questionnaire through our email list. Anyone on the list may then express interest in the puppy and we will choose the best match for family and puppy.
Purchase Price
Our puppy prices start at $1200 for pets on a spay/neuter agreement. Prices are set individually on each litter after they are born and are usually between $1200-$2000. My prices represent only a portion of what it actually costs to breed and raise each puppy with the high standards of care and quality that my puppy buyers have come to expect from a “Merrywind Teckels” dachshund. I do not differentiate prices…all puppies in a litter will usually be the same pet price regardless of gender, coat or color. All of our puppies go home UTD on vaccinations, dewormings, microchipped, vet checked, and (with pick-up) a whole “puppy pack” full of goodies such as food samples, toys, a crate bed or puppy blanket, a little puppy collar, and all sorts of useful dachshund information. Our puppies come with a lifetime of breeder support and guidance and a full three-year genetic health warranty.

Pick-up
Puppies are usually available to go to their new homes between 9-12 weeks of age, depending on the maturity of the litter. Puppies not picked up within one week of availability will be released for sale again and deposit will be forfeited unless arrangements are made for extended boarding. Extended boarding rates are charged on a per week basis and is due prior to boarding. Contact us for current rates. Payment in full is required before puppy is released or before extended boarding can be approved.
We DO NOT ship our puppies. We are located in southwest Iowa. If you live a considerable distance and would still like to be considered for one of our dachshund puppies, we can meet you part way or we can certainly meet you at the local airport so you can fly to pick up your new puppy and take him/her home in the cabin of the plane with you. We do ask a small fee to help cover gas expenses in these instances.
Payment methods
Merrywind Teckels accepts cash or USPS money orders. We do NOT accept personal checks, bank cashiers checks, or money orders from sources other than USPS. Final payments when picking up your puppy are CASH ONLY!
Registration Papers
All of our puppies are sold on a strictly enforced spay/neuter contract unless arrangements are made prior to the sale. If requested at the time of sale, AKC limited (non-breeding) registration application papers are mailed upon receipt of certificate of spay/neuter from a licensed veterinarian. Certificate of spay/neuter must list puppy by name and microchip number and will be verified with a call to your veterinarian’s office.
Full AKC registration is available to approved homes only. Please contact us in advance if you are interested in this option. Price for a puppy with full AKC registration and show/breeding rights is considerably higher than for a “pet only” puppy and is determined on a case-by-case basis.
Sales contract
All puppies are sold with a signed sales contract to protect both Merrywind Teckels and the puppy buyer. A sample copy of our sales contract is available to prospective homes upon request. You will be provided with the most updated version to sign when you decide to place a deposit on one of our puppies.
Lifetime commitment
We do not knowingly sell to brokers, pet shops or substandard breeders. Puppies are sold as family pets and companions and are not for resale under any circumstances without written approval by Merrywind Teckels. Before you make the decision to add a new puppy to your family, remember that a dog is a life-long commitment. If at any time in the life of your dachshund you become unable to care for him, Merrywind Teckels will always take him back to help in locating a new home. We never want any of our puppies to find themselves in a shelter or rehoming organization.
